Description

Staveley, Derbyshire born outside left Jimmy Poxton played local football for hometown club Staveley Town from 1922 and also played for Eckington before joining First Division West Bromwich Albion in June 1924, for whom he made his Football League debut against Manchester United in May 1927 in a 2-2 draw as Albion were relegated. He featured in 8 Second Division matches in 1927-28 for The Baggies, scoring against Notts County on Boxing Day, but in March 1928 moved to Gillingham as part of a player exchange deal and scored 9 goals in 44 appearances in just over a year at Priestfield before joining Millwall in May 1929.

He enjoyed five seasons with The Lions in the Second Division, scoring 34 goals in 154 games, 12 from the penalty spot, in his best season of 1931-32 scoring 14 goals of which 6 were from penalties, but when they were relegated in 1933-34 he had already lost his regular starting berth in late 1933 and he joined Watford on a free transfer in July 1934. Despite 10 goals in 26 games for The Hornets he wasn’t retained beyond the 1934-35 season and joined Walsall in May 1935, scoring 5 times in 29 outings before being released in the summer of 1936.
