Description

Larkhall, Lanarkshire born right half Jimmy Gibson played junior football for Larkhall Thistle in 1918, Kirkintilloch Rob Roy in 1919 and Glasgow Ashfield in 1920 before joining Scottish League club Partick Thistle in 1921, where he played almost 200 games, including 44 goals in 168 League matches for Thistle before a transfer to First Division club Aston Villa for a then-record fee of £7,500 in May 1927, making his Football League debut that month in the last game of the season at Huddersfield Town.

He won the first of 8 international caps for Scotland over four years while still a Partick Thistle player in a 1-0 win over England at Old Trafford in April 1926, although the highlight of his career was when he partnered Jimmy McMullan in the dominant Scottish midfield of “The Wembley Wizards” that defeated England 5-1 in April 1928. He also twice represented The Scottish League in 1925 and 1927 while a Thistle player.

He stayed at Aston Villa for nine full seasons, and was part of their teams that finished runners up in the League Championship in 1930-31 and 1932-33, missing only 3 and 4 matches respectively in those two campaigns. Having lost his regular place in 1934, he played his last match for Villa in April 1936 and retired after their relegation that season. In total he scored 10 goals in 227 appearances for The Villains.

He was the son of Scotland international and Glasgow Rangers stalwart Neilly Gibson, considered by many as the best Scottish player of his generation, and the brother of Neil and Willie Gibson, who were also successful professional footballers, Neil playing for Clyde and Willie for Ayr United and Newcastle United, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1924.
