Description

Aston born left half Frank Moss joined Walsall aged only 15 years old in 1910. He signed for First Division Aston Villa in February 1914 for a £250 transfer fee, making his Football League debut at Notts County in April 1915. During World War One he suffered a severe wound to the knee which threatened his career, however he recovered to resume his Villa career in 1919. When Jimmy Harrop was forced out of Villa’s 1920 FA Cup Final side through injury, Moss took his place, helping Villa to a 1-0 victory over Huddersfield.

Villa reached the FA Cup Final in 1924 with Moss captaining the side, however they were defeated 2-0 by Newcastle in their first FA Cup Final at Wembley. He left Aston Villa under a cloud having been suspended after being sent off in a match with Manchester United in August 1928, when his tackle had broken United’s Hugh McLennahan’s leg in 2 places. He never played again for Aston Villa. He signed for Cardiff City in January 1929 after 9 goals in 283 appearances for Aston Villa but only stayed in South Wales for six months, making 9 appearances, signing for Bromsgrove Rovers as their player-manager in the 1929 close season. He subsequently played two seasons with Worcester City before retiring.

He won 5 England caps between October 1921, when he made his debut in a 1-1 draw with Ireland in Belfast and April 1924, when he captained his country in a 1-1 draw against Scotland at Wembley. He also played twice for The Football League and won The Charity Shield in 1924 with The Professionals against The Amateurs.

His sons Amos and Frank Jr both played over 100 games each for Aston Villa, mainly immediately after World War Two, indeed Frank Jr made over 300 appearances.
