Larkhall, Lanarkshire born right half Willie Gibson played junior football for Larkhall Thistle in 1916, Cadzow St Anne’s in 1917, and St Anthony’s, Glasgow in 1918 before joining Ayr United in 1919. After four years at Somerset Park he joined First Division Newcastle United for £2,500 in November 1923, and he made his Football League debut at Preston North End the same month.
In his first season he played 8 FA Cup ties culminating in Newcastle’s FA Cup Final triumph at Wembley when they beat Aston Villa 2-0 in April 1924. He played 32 League games as Newcastle won the League Championship in 1926-27, but he lost his regular place from the start of the 1927-28 season and made only 16 further appearances before leaving the club in 1929 having scored 4 goals in 142 appearances to join Inverness Clachnacuddin. Gibson became Birmingham’s trainer in May 1929 and was trainer of Queen’s Park from 1946 until 1963.
He was the son of the famous Scottish international Neilly Gibson who played for Rangers and Partick Thistle, and the brother of footballers Jimmy Gibson, also a Scottish international who played for Partick Thistle and Aston Villa, and Neil Gibson, who played for Clyde.
