Description

Billingshurst, Sussex born outside left Arthur Holden began his career with Southern League club Portsmouth in 1903 before joining Southend United in 1906. In 1907 he moved to Plymouth Argyle and was a fixture in the team on the left wing over the next two years. The club handbook described him as “fast, dashing and noted for accurate centring”. In April 1909 he left Argyle to sign for First Division Chelsea after 10 goals in 83 appearances for The Pilgrims, making his Football League debut at Newcastle United the same month, where he made 20 appearances and scored once during a single year with the club, scoring one top flight win in a 3-1 win over Blackburn Rovers in February 1910.

In September 1910 he returned to Plymouth Argyle, immediately regaining his place on the wing and recapturing his previous good form. However, he lost his place in the side during the 1911-12 campaign and left the club at the end of the season, returning to Southend United, having added 3 goals in 47 appearances to his previous totals.  where he ended his career.
