Description

John McDowall played football for famous Scottish amateur club Queen’s Park for three years in the early 1880’s. He became secretary of The Scottish Football Association in 1882 only years after its foundation, a post he held until his death in 1928, and is its longest serving secretary. He administered and promoted the game in Scotland to the point where its position as Scotland’s national sport was unchallenged. Football developed during these years from a pastime into a major industry. Glasgow was at the heart of this development, with the SFA headquarters, the largest crowds, and the home of the national team (Hampden Park).
