Description

Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire born right back Charlie Wilson started his football career with hometown club Cleethorpes Town in the early 1920’s, from where he was signed by Third Division (North) club Grimsby Town in 1923, making his Football League debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers that November, immediately establishing himself as a first team regular. Wilson missed only 4 matches as The Mariners won the Third Division (North) Championship in 1926, helping them gain promotion to the top flight in 1929 when they finished Second Division runners up. An ever present in The Mariner’s first season in the top flight, he missed two matches in 1930-31 and 7 games as they were relegated in 1932. Losing his place that October, he only played twice more before joining Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in the summer of 1933 after 2 goals in 292 matches for Grimsby Town.

He had a single season at Dean Court, making 11 appearances for The Cherries across their 1933-34 campaign, before returning to Lincolnshire to join Midland League club Grantham in 1934. He subsequently joined Southern League club Peterborough United in 1935, his final club before his eventual retirement.

NB in the image he is shown with Grimsby team mates Jock Priestley, Jack Prior and Tommy Read.
