Blantyre, Lanarkshire born right back Jimmy Carabine had started in Scottish junior football with Blantyre Saint Joseph’s Boys Guild and then Larkhall Thistle before joining Third Lanark in 1934, where he often took penalties, being noted for his “strong accurate kicking and grand positional sense”, being “regarded as one of the most polished defenders in Scotland… (with) a big reputation for his sure kicking with both feet, his deadly tackling and his speed in recovery”. He continued to play for The Warriors through to 1947, despite the interruption of the Second World War, and made 216 appearances for them, scoring 10 goals.

In September 1937 he made the first of 5 representative appearances before the War for The Scottish League, playing in a 3-2 victory over The Irish League at The Oval, Belfast, and he received the first of 3 full international caps for Scotland in a 3-1 win against The Netherlands at The Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam in May 1938, also playing in October 1938 against Ireland and finally in a 2-1 defeat against England at Hampden Park in April 1939. He also featured in two unofficial games against Eastern USA and the American Soccer League (in which he scored a hat-trick) on the Scottish FA Tour to the United States and Canada in May 1939. He played in 9 wartime international matches through till October 1943, also guesting for Heart of Midlothian during the conflict. In 1946 he became manager of Third Lanark, a position he held until 1949.
