Description

Edmonton, London born outside left Alfred Whyman began his senior football career with Southern League Tottenham Hotspur in 1905, making his debut in a 2-0 defeat at Luton Town in March 1906, playing 18 times for Spurs over three seasons, scoring once in a 3-0 win over Swindon in January 1907. In 1908 he joined New Brompton (now Gillingham), where he scored 8 goals in 40 appearances during his single season in Kent, ending as the club’s top goalscorer, before returning to London to join Queen’s Park Rangers.

It was with Rangers that he won the Southern League Championship in 1911-12, making overall 206 appearances for them, scoring 25 goals in a career that spanned both sides of the First World War. In May 1912 he was also part of the Rangers side that lost 2-1 to League Champions Blackburn Rovers in the FA Charity Shield match, held at his former home ground, White Hart Lane. Whyman retired in 1920 immediately before Rangers joined The Football League for their inaugural season.

NB For the cartophilists among you, Alfred Whyman is perhaps unique in that he features in each of the three Taddy Footballers cigarette card series, 1907, 1908 and the rare 1913 issue, but on each occasion with a different club.
