Dundee born full back John Watson played for Scottish League side Dundee Wanderers in 1895 before joining Southern League New Brompton (now Gillingham) in 1896, scoring twice in 55 appearances for them before returning to Scotland in 1899 to join Scottish League club Dundee. He joined First Division Everton in 1900, making his Football League debut that April at Derby County, where he was part of their League Championship runners-up team in 1901-02. He made 44 appearances for The Toffees before a move to Southern League Tottenham Hotspur in 1902, where he made 127 appearances between 1902 and 1908 in Southern League and FA Cup matches, without scoring. However he never played for the club after they gained League status in 1908, retiring from football.
