Description

Small Heath, Birmingham born inside left or centre forward Walter Tarplin began his football career with Small Heath Albion in 1901 before joining Southern League club Coventry City in 1902. A year later he was signed by First Division club Notts County, making his Football League debut at Small Heath (now Birmingham) in April 1904.

He broke into the Notts first eleven on a regular basis in December 1904 and scored 13 goals in 37 appearances during 1905-06, when he missed only two matches, finishing as the club’s joint top goalscorer with Arthur Green.

After 27 goals in 103 appearances for The Magpies he joined Southern League club Reading in 1908, but stayed only a season at Elm Park before moving to Birmingham League club Stafford Rangers in 1909, playing for Shrewsbury Town later the same year before his retirement from football.
