Description

Ebchester, County Durham born left half Austen “Aussie” Campbell began his football career with Spen Black & White in 1917 before joining Leadgate Park in 1918, and first played professional football for Coventry City whom he joined in 1920, making his Football League debut at Wolverhampton Wanderers in February 1921, but he only played a single first team game for them, returning to Leadgate Park in June 1921.

He joined Blackburn Rovers in February 1923 and he established himself as a first team regular the following year, being a member of their 1928 FA Cup Final winning team that triumphed with a 3-1 victory over Huddersfield Town at Wembley. He first played for England against Ireland at Goodison Park in October 1928 and went on to win 8 caps for his country through to his final international appearance, a 7-1 victory over Spain at Highbury in December 1931. He was also a member of The FA Tour to Canada in the summer of 1931 and made five appearances for The Football League

Early in the 1929-30 season, after 9 goals in 184 games for Rovers, Huddersfield Town signed him for a ‘considerable’ transfer fee and two years later he was back at Wembley, facing legendary ex Terriers manager Herbert Chapman’s Arsenal in the 1930 Cup Final – Arsenal triumphed 2-0.

He was a member of Town’s 1934 League Championship runners up team making 38 appearances during the campaign but lost his place in January 1935, and after 6 goals in 212 games for Huddersfield he joined Hull City in November 1935. However he only played 11 games for The Tigers in a season in which they suffered relegation joining non league Darwen in the summer of 1936 before his eventual retirement.
