Darnall, Sheffield born wing half Frank Smith played for junior club Sheffield in 1913 before joining Second Division Barnsley in 1914, making his Football League debut at Derby County that September. He played for Barnsley both sides of World War One making 26 appearances before joining Swansea Town in the close season of 1920, however he only made one appearance for The Swans in their inaugural Football League fixture at Portsmouth that August. He joined Grimsby Town in 1921 making 5 further appearances in October and December of 1921 before joining non league Charlton’s of Grimsby in 1922, subsequently playing for Haycroft Rovers in 1923 and Louth Town in 1924.
