Description
Amateur footballer Fred Sargent was a centre forward who had a long football career dating from 1874 when he played for The Clarendon, playing in Hertfordshire for among others St Albans, Hertfordshire Rangers, Champion Hill, a club that merged to form London Caledonians, and Watford Rovers, the club that became Watford Football Club in 1898, being known as Watford Rovers until 1893, where he was club captain, playing for the club until at least 1894 (by when it was known as West Herts), where he also featured at outside right. It was said of him “A tricky as well as speedy forward, he plays the game throughout and has always been a heavy scorer.” He was also noted as a cricketer and an athlete, and was about 37 when this portrait was taken.
