Stalybridge, Cheshire born left back Joe Brooks began his football career as an amateur with Stalybridge Rovers from 1899 and while still an amateur he joined Second Division club Glossop in December 1900, making his Football League debut against Walsall in March 1901, making three further appearances for The Hillmen during March before returning to play for Stalybridge Rovers later in 1901.

In 1903 he joined Southern League club Watford where he made 106 appearances over the next four seasons, before being signed by First Division Sheffield United in April 1907. He was a regular in The Blades’ first eleven until November 1910 and had a further run in the first team between September and December 1911, before leaving Bramall Lane after 128 appearances for Sheffield United, returning to his home town to join Central League club Stalybridge Celtic in 1912, his last club before his eventual retirement.
