Gateshead, County Durham born centre forward Joe Robson started his football career with Craghead United in 1922, playing for Saltwell Villa in 1923 before joining Third Division (North) club Grimsby Town in September 1924. He made his Football League debut against Wrexham the same month, and scored 6 goals in only 7 appearances the following season as Grimsby won the Third Division (North) Championship.

Said of him that he “plays with rare dash and shoots splendidly”, he broke into the first team as a regular in October 1926 and scored hat-tricks against Middlesbrough and Fulham and 4 goals against Wolves as he finished the club’s top goalscorer with 25 goals, following that up with 26 strikes in 1927-28, 32 in 1928-29 and 30 in 1929-30, before First Division Huddersfield Town stepped in with a cheque for £8,000 for his signature in September 1930, just into the new season, after 124 goals in 167 appearances for The Mariners. He scored 18 goals including 2 hat-tricks in his first season at Leeds Road, first against Blackburn Rovers and then in a 10-1 demolition of Blackpool, but lost his place the following season and joined Bradford Park Avenue in May 1932 after 20 goals in 31 appearances for The Terriers.

But a single season at The Avenue produced 7 goals in 17 appearances before he joined Midland League club Gainsborough Trinity in 1933, signing for Nuneaton Town in July 1934 and for Burton Town in 1935 before his eventual retirement.
