Monton Green, Eccles, Manchester born centre forward Norman Bullock began his football career with Broughton St John’s in 1917 and played for Sedgley Park Amateurs in 1918 and both Prestwich Amateurs and South Salford Lads Club in 1919, before he signed amateur forms with Bury in 1920 and made his Football League debut for The Shakers against Nottingham Forest in October that year, scoring twice in a 2-2 draw at Gigg Lane, before turning professional in February 1921.

He would be a regular over the next fifteen seasons, which included five seasons in the First Division, and was for many years their club captain, before retiring at the end of 1935 having accumulated a still to this day club record appearance total of 505 League and 537 total appearances. Bullock first scored more than 20 goals in a season in 1922-23, when his total included 4 goals in a 5-1 win over Clapton Orient in December 1922, and a hat-trick against Derby County the following March. In his best season, 1925-26, he scored 32 goals including trebles against Sheffield United and Burnley.

He scored 127 goals for Bury and also won 3 caps for England, scoring on his debut in a 6-1 victory over Belgium at Highbury in March 1923 and again on his final appearance, a 3-3 draw with Ireland at Anfield in October 1926. He also represented The Football League once.

By the time he retired he had already been appointed as Bury’s manager in December 1935, a position he continued to hold until June 1938 when he took over as manager of Chesterfield. After The Second World War he returned as manager of Bury in June 1945 and stayed another four years before taking over as manager of Leicester City in December 1949, leaving in February 1955.
