Bridgeton, Glasgow born centre forward Jimmy Richardson started his football career with junior club Gleniffer in 1904, joining Blantyre Victoria in 1905 and Kirkintilloch Rob Roy in 1906 before joining Scottish League Third Lanark in 1907 before joining Second Division Huddersfield Town in 1910 making his Football League debut at Clapton Orient in November that year in what was Huddersfield’s inaugural League campaign. He played 2 seasons at Leeds Road scoring 25 goals in 44 appearances before Sunderland signed him in the summer of 1912. He scored 11 goals in their League Championship triumph of 1912-13 and another 6 goals in their FA Cup run which ended in defeat to Aston Villa in the Final at Crystal Palace in front of 121,919 spectators as they attempted to complete the League and Cup Double. He lost his place in the Sunderland team in February 1914 and joined Ayr United after 30 goals in 45 games on Wearside, and at Ayr he played both sides of World War One, going on loan to Partick Thistle in 1914, and representing The Scottish League against The Football League twice in February and April 1919, scoring twice in a 3-2 win at Ibrox in the latter game. In 1921 he returned to England joining Millwall scoring 4 times in 19 appearances during 1921-22 before retiring from football.
