Description

Chatham, Kent born inside forward Stan Sayer, who played in all three inside forward positions, began his football career after the First World War with Kent League club Ramsgate Town, from where he joined newly elected Third Division club Millwall in January 1921, making his Football League debut at Crystal Palace the same month, missing only one fixture before the end of the season as Millwall finished seventh in the division. However he lost his place after one match at the start of the following season, and had two short spells in the team before the end of the season, before joining non league Northfleet United in the summer of 1922 after 2 goals in 31 appearances for The Lions.

He returned to Football League action when he signed for Third Division (North) club Tranmere Rovers in March 1923, scoring 9 goals in his first 7 matches before the season end, netting in every game. In 1923-24 he missed only one match, and was comfortably Rovers’ top goalscorer with 19 goals, a haul which included a hat-trick in an FA Cup replay win over Coventry City at Prenton Park in December 1923. He was far less prolific the following season, when he played a clutch of matches at right half, and in July 1925 he joined near neighbours New Brighton after 33 goals in 87 appearances for Tranmere Rovers.

He had a brief spell with New Brighton, scoring in a 3-2 win over former club Tranmere Rovers at Sandheys Park, but transferred to Wigan Borough in November 1925 after 5 goals in 12 matches. His spell at Springfield Park was similarly brief albeit productive, with 11 goals in 20 appearances before he was transferred to Lincoln City in March 1926. After three clubs in 1925-26 he played the whole of the following season at Sincil Bank, scoring 6 goals in 35 appearances for The Imps before a move to Southend United in July 1927.

He scored a rare goal on his Southend debut in a win over Northampton Town in October 1927 but only scored once more in 34 appearances before a move into non league football with Dartford in the 1929 close season. He played for Ramsgate later in 1929, joining Folkestone in 1930, he then joined Bexleyheath & Welling in 1932 and finally played for Dagenham Town in 1933 before his eventual retirement.
