Description

Tollcross, Glasgow born outside left Tom Mooney began his football career with Kirkmuirhill in 1926 and played for Stonehouse Violet in 1927, Royal Albert in 1928 and Larkhall Thistle in 1929 before spending 1930-31 on the books at Glasgow Celtic, without making a first team appearance for The Bhoys. He joined Airdrieonians in 1931 and his career his career blossomed at Broomfield Park, so much so that he won representative honours for The Scottish League when he played in a defeat against The Irish League in Belfast in September 1933. He was picked again for the same fixture in October 2 years later, this time the Scots triumphed 3-2. Described at the time as: “probably has the strongest shot (in Scottish football), rattling the ball in with terrific force from all ranges and angles”.

In October 1936 he signed for Second Division Newcastle United for £2,650 and made his Football League debut the same month against Leicester City. His best season at St James’ Park was 1938-39, when he scored 12 goals in 42 appearances, missing only 4 games all season, but his Newcastle career was ended by the Second World War after 19 goals in 81 appearances. During the War he played wartime football for Airdrie, and in 1944 he joined Morton and subsequently finished his career with them.
