Description

Lochgelly, Fife born inside left Tommy McLean began his football career with junior sides Crosshill United and Bowhill Juniors, from where he joined Scottish League club Arbroath in 1923, playing for Lochgelly United later the same year and St Johnstone from 1925. It was at McDairmid Park that he attracted the attention of First Division club Blackburn Rovers who signed him in February 1927, his Football League debut coming against Newcastle United the following month. The following season he was a regular for Rovers and played in their triumphant FA Cup Final victory over Huddersfield Town at Wembley, scoring their second goal in a 3-1 victory.

He appeared in their FA Charity Shield defeat to Everton at Old Trafford in October 1928 and continued as a regular in Rovers’ line up for eight seasons until he lost his place in February 1935, transferring to Exeter City in June 1935 after 49 goals for Blackburn Rovers in 275 matches. He scored once in 24 matches, all during 1935-36, for The Grecians before he joined Barrow in February 1937, saying “the Devonshire climate didn’t suit me,” and netted twice in 11 matches for Barrow ahead of his retirement.
