Description

Sanquhar, Dumfries & Galloway born centre forward Peter Turnbull began his senior football career by joining Glasgow Rangers in 1891 and made his Scottish League debut at Clyde in May 1892. He scored once in two further appearances in the 1892-93 season before moving to Glasgow Thistle later in 1892. In the spring of 1893 he joined First Division Burnley, scoring on his Football League debut in a 4-2 victory over local rivals Preston North End at Turf Moor in March 1893, scoring three more goals in five further appearances before the end of the season. The following season he missed only three games for The Clarets and was the club’s top scorer with 17 goals in 28 appearances.

In March 1895 he was signed by Bolton Wanderers after 23 goals in 48 appearances for Burnley, and he scored in his first two games for Blackburn, following those up with a hat-trick in his third match in a 5-0 win over West Bromwich Albion in April 1895. But after 5 goals in only 4 appearances he departed for Blackburn Rovers in the 1895 close season, where he scored 8 goals in 26 appearances during his only season at the club. He returned to Glasgow Rangers in the summer of 1896 and scored 13 goals in 16 games for Rangers through to April 1898, during his time at Ibrox he also had a loan spell back at Blackburn Rovers making one further appearance for them in April 1898.

In the summer of 1898 he joined Southern League Millwall Athletic, before moving to Queen’s Park Rangers in 1899 where he scored 13 goals in 28 appearances before joining Brentford midway through the 1900-01 season. His 15 goals in 13 appearances helped Brentford to the 1900-01 Southern League Second Division Championship but he could only manage two goals in 11 appearances the following season back in the Southern League top flight. He finished his career by joining Barrow at the end of 1901 before playing for his final club, Tranmere Rovers.
