Nottingham born full back Owen Marshall started his football career with Ilkeston United in 1912 and was signed by First Division Chelsea in 1913, making his Football League debut against West Bromwich Albion that September and managing 18 appearances in his debut season. Although never a first team regular at Stamford Bridge, and not picked for the 1915 FA Cup Final, he played both sides of the First World War for Chelsea, making a total of 36 appearances for The Pensioners, before joining Gillingham in May 1921. In his first season at Priestfield he made 39 appearances but played in only the first three fixtures of the new season before losing his place, possibly through injury. He then joined non league Maidstone United in 1923 finishing his professional football career.
