Description

Bosham, Sussex born left winger Zillwood “Zach” March started playing for local junior club Bosham F.C. in 1912, signing for Southern League Brighton & Hove Albion in 1913 having been spotted by Brighton manager Jack Robson. During World War One he served in the Royal Sussex Regiment. He scored a hat-trick for Brighton in a Southern League 3-2 win over Watford in December 1919. He made his Football League debut in Brighton’s inaugural Football League fixture at Southend in August 1920, and he scored twice in the FA Cup giant killing 4-1 win over First Division Oldham Athletic in January 1921. He played his last Brighton game of 62 in the 2 seasons after Brighton achieved League status in May 1922 and moved to Portsmouth that summer, but made only 4 appearances for Pompey that autumn before finishing his playing career after sustaining injury against Plymouth Argyle. He died in Bognor Regis a month short of his 102nd birthday in 1994, by when  he was the oldest living former professional footballer.
