Description

Newcastle-on-Tyne born right back James Lockie played for Newcastle teams St Thomas’s, Caxton and Trafalgar in the early 1890’s before joining Willington Athletic in 1894, from where he was signed by Second Division club Newcastle United, making his debut in their April 1898 Test match against Stoke, also playing as they sealed promotion to the top flight for the first time in the club’s history in a further Test match against Blackburn Rovers. The following season he made his Football League debut against Notts County in September, the only League match he played for Newcastle, before joining Second Division club Grimsby Town in March 1899, for whom he made 6 appearances before the end of the season.

Lockie moved to Southern League club New Brompton (now Gillingham) in the 1899 close season, and after a season moved to Gravesend United before returning to New Brompton in 1901. After a further four seasons he returned to the north east to join Hebburn Argyle in 1905, his last known club before his eventual retirement.
