Description

Having served in The Royal Garrison Artillery during the First World War, Busby, Renfrewshire born inside left or centre forward Arthur Lochhead began his senior career with Heart of Midlothian in July 1918, before making his Scottish League debut against  Clyde at Tynecastle in March 1919. He soon came into consideration for the Scotland national team, taking part in the 1920 Home Scots v Anglo-Scots trial match but wasn’t selected for a full Scotland cap. He scored 24 goals in only 34 games for Hearts, playing his last match for them in April 1921, before he was sold to First Division Manchester United in a swap deal in the summer of 1921, with Hearts exchanging him for £530 and Tom Miller.

He made his Football League debut at Everton in August 1921 and developed into a regular goalscorer for United. After scoring 50 goals in 153 appearances for The Red Devils, he transferred to Leicester City in October 1925 for £3,300, where he netted over 100 times in 10 seasons and was part of the side who finished League Championship runners-up in 1928-29 after having been 3rd place the year before, the club’s best League placings until 2016.

He never scored more than 17 in a single season, which he achieved during 1927-28, but was often on target, and with the likes of quality players such as Hugh Adcock, Ernie Hine and Arthur Chandler alongside it’s no surprise it took Leicester the best part of a century to go one better. By the time he played his last game for The Foxes in September 1934 he had scored 114 goals in 320 matches. He then managed Leicester City from October 1934 after the death of Peter Hodge to September 1936, when he was succeeded by Frank Womack.
