Description

Wishaw, Lanarkshire born outside right George Stewart began his football career with Strathclyde before joining Scottish League club Hibernian in 1902, soon establishing himself as a leading player for Hibs. He first represented The Scottish League in February 1904 when he played in a 3-1 victory over The Irish League at Love Street, St Mirren, and was recalled to the League team to face The Football League in March 1906, as they were beaten 6-2 at Stamford Bridge.

His full Scotland debut also came while with Hibernian, in a 2-0 defeat to Wales at Tynecastle in March 1906, and he played the next month as Scotland beat England 2-1 at Hampden Park in front of 102,000 spectators. Stewart was then transferred to First Division Manchester City at the end of that season for £650, making his Football League debut against Woolwich Arsenal at Hyde Road on 1st September, and scoring 8 goals in 38 appearances during his first season with City, which saw him win two further Scotland caps against Wales and England in March and April of 1907.

However he lost his Manchester City place in September 1907 and became a fringe player for the next four seasons, although in 1909-10, City having been relegated in 1909, he played more regularly scoring 3 goals in 26 appearances as The Citizens won the Second Division Championship at the first time of asking to return to the top flight. After 13 goals in 102 appearances he returned to Scotland in 1911, joining Partick Thistle, where he saw out his senior career, retiring in 1912.
