Smethwick, Sandwell & Dudley born inside forward Fred Haycock played junior football for Smethwick Victoria in 1902 and Coombs Wood in 1903 and began his professional career signing for Second Division West Bromwich Albion in 1904, making his Football League debut against Burnley on New Year’s Eve 1904. After two seasons as a fringe player at The Hawthorns, scoring 8 goals in 15 appearances, he left the club to join Crewe Alexandra of the Birmingham & District League, and spent another two years at Gresty Road before joining Southern League Luton Town in 1908. He moved on to Portsmouth in 1909, before returning to the Football League with Lincoln City in 1910, where in his only season with the club, Haycock was their leading scorer, albeit with only six goals from 28 League and FA Cup appearances as the team finished bottom of the League and were not re-elected. He moved on to Port Vale of the Central League in August 1911. A regular in the first eleven, he was part of the side that won the Staffordshire Senior Cup in 1912 and scored 11 goals in 24 appearances. He then moved back to the Birmingham & District with Dudley Town in 1913, later joining Shrewsbury Town in 1915 before retirement.
