Stockport, Cheshire born winger Harry Crossthwaite had been signed by Second Division Stockport County from Heywood United in 1912, and made his Football League debut at Lincoln City in December 1912. He played for County both sides of the First World War before joining Stoke City at the beginning of March 1920 after 7 goals in 78 games for The Hatters. At Stoke he made 31 appearances over the first two post war seasons, but in the summer of 1921 he re-joined County, who meantime had been relegated, helping them to bounce straight back by winning the Division Three (North) Championship, Crossthwaite playing 34 of their League games that season. He played one more season for Stockport before joining (by then non league) Stalybridge Celtic in 1923 after a total of 11 goals in 131 games across his two spells.
