Preston, Lancashire born right winger Joe Walton began his career at hometown Second Division club Preston North End, making his Football League debut against Stockport County in March 1902 and during 1902 and 1903 he made 25 League appearances and scored four goals. The outside right joined Southern League Tottenham Hotspur in 1903 featuring prominently during their final few Southern League campaigns scoring 27 goals in 116 appearances and appearing for The Professionals against The Amateurs in an England trial match in January 1906.
When Tottenham joined the Football League in 1908-09 he played in a further 28 matches including Spurs’ inaugural League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 1908, and scored on two occasions in all competitions as they won promotion to the First Division as Second Division runners up. However Walton signed for Sheffield United in the 1909 close season and went on to score seven goals in 62 appearances over the following two seasons. After leaving Bramall Lane he joined Stalybridge Celtic in 1911 and Hurst in 1912 where he ended his career.
