Description

Reading Berkshire born left back Reg Bungay began his football career playing for Haywards Sports and played for Oxford City, from where he signed for Tottenham Hotspur in 1931, playing initially at left half or inside left. He spent two seasons at Tottenham but didn’t make the first eleven at White Hart Lane. Bungay signed for Second Division club Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 1933 and made his Football League debut at West Ham United that September, but in two seasons at Home Park failed to move out of the fringes and played just 3 matches for Argyle.

A move to Bristol City followed in the 1935 close season, and he scored in each of his first two matches for The Robins  before losing his place, and after 3 goals in 8 appearances he joined Mansfield Town in the summer of 1936, where he was soon converted to left back by January 1937 having failed to maintain a place in the first team at inside left during the first half of the season.

He had three seasons of regular football at Field Mill, scoring 6 goals in 98 appearances for The Stags, but lost his place in February 1939 and returned to London to join Clapton Orient in May 1939. He played in all 3 of Clapton Orient’s League matches at the start of the 1939-40 season before the outbreak of the Second World War on 3rd September forced the abandonment of peacetime football, and effectively ended Bungay’s career, playing once more for Clapton Orient in a wartime fixture against West Ham United that December.
