Description

Northwich, Cheshire born inside left Sam Bowyer began his football career with Rudheath Albion and played for Lostock Gralam from 1903 to 1905, for whom he once scored 4 goals in 6 minutes in a match against Altrincham, joining Witton Albion in 1905 and playing for Earlstown from late 1905 before being bought by First Division Liverpool for £95 in March 1907, making his Football League debut at Manchester United the same September. Never a regular, Bowyer’s most telling contribution for Liverpool in an FA Cup tie when he scored two goals in three minutes against Gainsborough Trinity in January 1911, having been scolded for lack of accuracy in his shooting in the match programme a month earlier.

Bowyer scored 16 goals in 48 appearances for Liverpool during five seasons at Anfield before he was transferred to Second Division Bristol City in February 1912 along with Liverpool team mate Joe Brough, where he scored on his debut in a win at (the very same) Gainsborough Trinity. He was a regular in his time at Ashton Gate, missing only two matches in 1912-13 and finding the net 14 times in 50 appearances. He then joined non league Bedminster in July 1913 and moved back to Merseyside with South Liverpool in 1914, the year which led to the outbreak of the First World War, during which Bowyer retired from football.
