Chester-El-Street, County Durham born right back Jimmy Armstrong joined hometown junior club Chester-le-Street in 1920 and signed for Second Division Barnsley in 1921, making his debut in an FA Cup tie at Preston North End in February 1922. He appeared 65 times for the Tykes in four seasons at Oakwell, before moving to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in 1925, where he only played 15 times over two seasons on the south coast. He returned north in 1927 and joined Accrington Stanley, where he rarely missed a game over the next seven seasons, being ever present in both 1928-29 and 1929-30, scoring 8 goals in 279 appearances before joining non league Stalybridge Celtic in 1934.
