Description

Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway born left half Bert MacLachlan joined First Division club Aston Villa from St Cuthbert Wanderers in 1913, but played only three matches for the English club, making his Football League debut at Sheffield United in January 1914, playing twice more against Newcastle and Middlesbrough in April – Villa lost all 3 matches conceding 3 in every game.

Released, he moved to Aberdeen in the summer of 1914, making his Scottish League debut at Dundee that August, and after serving in the Army as a gunner during the First World War, he was appointed Aberdeen club captain in 1919. MacLachlan scored 16 goals in 361 appearances for The Dons, representing The Scottish League against The Football League in March 1920 in a 4-0 defeat at Celtic Park, before moving to Heart of Midlothian in 1927. However he doesn’t appear to have played for the Hearts first eleven before his eventual retirement.

His younger brother Fred played for Aberdeen, Coventry, Grimsby, Bury and Halifax. Another brother, John, played for Partick Thistle, Dundee and Aston Villa.
