Description

Kelty, Fife born centre forward Willie Penman began his football career with Raith Rovers during the Second World War, signing for the club in 1940 and making his debut in wartime football in 1942. Described as “tall and well built”… “this fine… versatile player … is also a capable wingman”, he was the leading goalscorer in the Scottish Second Division in 1948-49 when he scored 58 goals in 47 matches and helped Raith win the Second Division championship and reach the Scottish League Cup Final, which was lost 2-0 to Rangers at Hampden Park. During the final Penman scored a goal shortly before half time which was controversially deemed offside.

Penman led Raith’s goal scoring every season between 1947 and 1951 and eventually left Starks Park in 1955 after 91 goals in 138 matches for Raith. He then scored 8 goals in 11 matches for Montrose during the early months of 1955-56 and had a final spell with Dundee United, scoring once in 5 matches between December 1955 and February 1956 before retiring from football after his release in May 1956.
