Description

Saltcoats, Ayrshire born inside left George Anderson began his football career with Dalry Thistle in 1924 and signed for Scottish League Airdrieonians in 1925, scoring a sensational 13 goals in 13 appearances for The Diamonds before being sold to Third Division (South) club Brentford in May 1926, where he made his Football League debut against Bristol City that November, scoring twice in a 3-0 victory. However he only scored once more for The Bees in 8 further appearances, nonetheless he was signed by Second Division Chelsea in May 1927. A fringe player at Stamford Bridge, he made 9 appearances for The Pensioners over the following two seasons before a transfer to Norwich City in May 1929.

He was a regular in The Canaries’ line up during 1929-30 and scored a hat-trick in a 5-1 victory over Merthyr Town in April 1930, scoring 12 goals in 30 appearances, but again moved on at the end of the season, joining Carlisle United in August 1930. He played 2 games for The Cumbrians in September, scoring once, but was released at the month end, and after a trial at Gillingham he returned to Scotland to join Cowdenbeath, He stayed two years at Central Park but returned to England in 1932 joining Yeovil & Petters United, from where he returned to Football League action with Second Division Bury in June 1933.

After 9 goals in 22 appearances during 1933-34, Anderson scored once more in 4 further appearances for The Shakers in the autumn of 1934 before being signed by First Division Huddersfield Town in November 1934, scoring 4 goals in 14 top flight appearances during the rest of their 1934-35 campaign. But having lost his place in The Terriers’ line up he joined Mansfield Town in January 1936, and was a consistent goal getter for The Stags over the next season and a half, scoring 17 goals in 38 appearances before joining Midland League club Newark Town in the 1937 close season. He soon returned to Scottish League football with Ayr United later the same year, and finished his career joining hometown junior club Saltcoats Victoria in 1939, shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War.
