Longriggend, Lanarkshire born goalkeeper Jim Ferguson played for Airdriehill Shamrock in 1915 before joining Partick Thistle in 1916, returning to non league Scottish football with Glasgow League St Roch’s in 1919. From there he joined Brentford in 1926, making his Football League debut against Brighton & Hove Albion that August, and making 74 appearances before Second Division Notts County stepped in to sign him in March 1928. He was an ever present in 1928-29 and missed only one match as Notts were relegated in 1929-30, however he remained the principal goalkeeper playing 37 games in their 1930-31 campaign as they won the Third Division (South) Championship at the first time of asking. He made 164 appearances for The Magpies before returning to Scotland to join Ayr United in the summer of 1932.
