Description

Dennistoun, Glasgow born outside right Peter Buchanan began his football career with St Mungo’s of Glasgow in 1932 and spent 1933-34 with Chelsea without making their first eleven before returning to Scottish junior football with Wishaw Juniors in 1934. He returned to Stamford Bridge in November 1935 and made his Football League debut for Chelsea against Preston North End in February 1937, his only appearance of the season. However he broke into The Pensioners’ first team in September 1937, and such was the impression he made that he was called up for Scotland, scoring on his only appearance for the national side in a 5-0 win over Czechoslovakia at Ibrox Park in December 1937.

He scored 6 goals in 40 appearances for Chelsea before the outbreak of the Second World War seriously interrupted his career in September 1939. During the War, Buchanan made guest appearances for several clubs including West Ham United, Southampton, for whom he made 11 appearances between 1942 and 1946, scoring twice, Aldershot, Portsmouth, Millwall, Crystal Palace and Fulham. He ended up joining Fulham on a permanent basis in March 1946 and scored once in 21 appearances for The Cottagers during their first Second Division post war campaign, before moving to Brentford in August 1947. He was a near ever present in their 1947-48 season and a regular in his second year at the club, but after 14 goals in 80 appearances for The Bees he joined non league Headington United (soon to be renamed Oxford United) in 1949 before his eventual retirement.
