Description
Cleobury, Shropshire born outside right Hugh “M.H.” Stanborough played for Charterhouse School, making the XI in 1889. He joined Caius College at Cambridge University, earning his blue in 1890-92, being captain of the Cambridge team in his final year. He was first selected for England in an unofficial international in a 6-1 win over the Canadian Americans at The Oval in December 1891, and he won his only England cap in March 1895, when he played in a 1-1 draw with Wales at The Recreation Ground, West Kensington.
He became an Old Carthusian and won the FA Amateur Cup with them in 1894 when they beat The Casuals 2-1 at the Athletic Ground, Richmond and he also played with the Corinthians team between 1890 and 1904, In 1894-95, he was with The Casuals. He also played for Eastbourne and Old Salopians, before retiring because of a knee injury.
