Description

Prestwich, Cheshire born right back Bill Winstanley played for Cheshire League side Altrincham in 1934 before earning a move to First Division Stoke City in 1935, his Football League debut coming against Derby County that October. He made an instant impression on new manager Bob McGrory he played 31 matches in 1935-36 and then 21 more in 1936-37 until he suffered a broken leg on Christmas Day 1936 playing against Chelsea. Having missed the whole of 1937-38 he was never able to force his way back into the first team with the exception of one further outing against Middlesbrough in September 1938 and a year later he returned to Manchester and played for Trafford Park, his career effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War.
