Tynemouth, Northumberland born right back or right half Bill Adams began his football career with Sunderland Colliery and joined Guildford United in July 1925 before signing for Second Division Southampton in March 1926, making his Football League debut against Stoke City in August the following year, but he didn’t play again for the first eleven until the start of the 1930-31 season. However once in the team he established himself and was an ever present in 1931-32. He went on to become club captain, making 205 appearances for The Saints over a decade at The Dell, scoring 3 times.

He signed for West Ham United for £500 in August 1936 scoring a rare goal on his debut in November 1936 against none other than his old club Southampton at The Dell, but only played 3 games for them before transferring to Southend United in January 1937, where he made a further 13 League appearances before retiring at the end of the season.
