Camlachie, Glasgow born wing half Frank Campbell began his football career with Scottish Intermediate League club Irvine Meadow from where he signed for Second Division Southampton in July 1931 and made his Football League debut against Tottenham Hotspur in September 1931. He was a first team regular over the next three seasons although suffered a fractured thigh and from chronic arthritis in his knee, which forced him to retire in 1934 after 89 games and 5 goals for the club. He briefly played amateur football for Newport in the Isle of Wight in 1935.
