Colmonell, Ayrshire born centre forward Andrew Wilson began his football career with Irvine Meadow in 1898 before joining Scottish League Clyde in 1899, before joining First Division Sheffield Wednesday in the 1900 close season, making his Football League debut at Manchester City on 1st September, immediately establishing himself as Wednesday’s first choice centre forward. A consistent goalscorer throughout his Wednesday career, he won back to back League Championships in 1902-03 and 1903-04, and was only in the bottom half of the First Division in three of his fifteen seasons as a regular at Hillsborough.
He won the FA Cup with Wednesday in 1907 in one of those seasons, scoring twice in the semi final to help beat Woolwich Arsenal at St Andrews before playing his part in the Final, where they defeated Everton 2-1 at The Crystal Palace. He was also twice a losing FA Cup semi finalist in 1904 and 1905, and remarkably returned after the First World War to make a final appearance for The Owls at Liverpool in March 1920, already aged 41. With that match he had scored 218 goals in 546 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday.
He was capped for Scotland six times between April 1907, when he won his first cap in a 1-1 draw with England at St James’ Park, Newcastle and March 1914, when he played in a 1-1 draw against Ireland at Windsor Park, Belfast. He scored once, in a 1-1 draw with England at Hampden Park in April 1908.
After his playing retirement Wilson began a managerial career, initially with Third Division (South) Bristol Rovers where he spent over five years between March 1921 and May 1926. He joined Second Division Oldham Athletic in July 1927 and managed them for five seasons, before becoming manager of Stockport County in July 1932, remaining only until the end of the 1932-33 season.
Three of Wilson’s brothers were also professional footballers. David was capped once by Scotland and spent most of his career with Oldham Athletic, Alex also played for Oldham while James mainly played with Preston North End.
