Liverpool born wing half Harold Cothliff played junior football for Prescot Cables before joining Manchester City in April 1936, spending a season at Maine Road without making a first team appearance. He moved to Nottingham Forest in May 1937 but failed to make an appearance at The City Ground and joined Torquay United in June 1938, making his Football League debut against Northampton Town that August. He was an ever present until football was suspended due to the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, playing for Torquay both sides of the War and made his final appearance for The Gulls against Norwich City in September 1947, having scored once, in a 3-3 draw at Watford in April 1947, in 75 appearances before joining non league Ilfracombe Town in 1948.
