Description

Medomsley, near Consett, County Durham born centre half Tommy Graham began his football career with Derwentside Blues in 1923 and played for Chopwell Institute in 1924, Hamsterley Swifts in 1925, and North Eastern League club Consett Celtic in 1926 before he signed professional with Second Division Nottingham Forest for £50 in May 1927, making his Football League debut at Bristol City in April 1928. From the start of the following season he was a fixture in the Nottingham Forest first eleven playing in every season up to and including the 1939-40 season, when the outbreak of the Second World War forced peacetime football to be abandoned.

Despite Forest being in the Second Division, he was considered good enough to be selected twice for England, making his international debut on England’s 1931 summer tour in a 5-2 defeat to France in Paris  in May 1931 and being selected again in a 6-2 win over Ireland at Windsor Park, Belfast in October 1931. He also made two appearances for The Football League playing in a 4-0 win over The Irish League at Blackpool in September 1931 and in a 4-3 defeat to The Scottish League at Celtic Park two months later.

He became The Reds’ club captain and played a total of 391 games for Nottingham Forest, scoring 7 goals before the War effectively ended his career. He also played for The FA against a Yorkshire XI in a 1940 wartime fixture before retiring in 1944. After retiring from playing, Graham became Nottingham Forest’s trainer until January 1961, then serving as their Chief Scout and youth advisor until March 1969, after which he was a part time scout for another year.
