Hartley Wintney, Hampshire born centre forward Willie Whitton was with Inverness Caledonian in 1920 before spending 1921-22 with Tottenham Hotspur without ever appearing in League or FA Cup fixtures but scoring 2 goals in 2 “other” matches. He joined First Division Chelsea in 1923 and made his Football League debut at West Bromwich Albion in March 1923, Although initially a fringe player before their relegation in 1924 his career peaked when he scored 16 goals in 23 appearances in 1924-25, with a hat-trick at Oldham in September 1924 being followed by all 4 goals at home to Leicester City two days later. It was however a brief peak. He never played again after April 1924 (after almost certainly getting injured), having scored 19 goals in 39 appearances for Chelsea.
