Description

Garstang, Lancashire born wing half Arnold Whiteside began his football career with Woodplumpton Juniors in 1931 before joining First Division Blackburn Rovers in January 1932, making his Football League debut against Liverpool in November 1932 and making 14 appearances in his debut season. He became a regular member of the Rovers team from January 1934, and although they suffered relegation in 1936, he played 33 League games as they won the Second Division Championship in 1938-39.

However his career was the interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War and during the War he was a member of the Blackburn side which lost the 1940 Football League War Cup Final to West Ham United. He guested for Liverpool during the War, and after its conclusion Whiteside returned to Blackburn, being initially a regular in 1946-47, but increasingly a fringe player before moving to non league Wigan Athletic in 1949 after 3 goals in 242 appearances for Rovers.
