Wing half Robert Whiteman began his senior career with Southern League Norwich City, although exact details of his time there are vague, He joined West Ham United in the summer of 1909, and made his debut for The Irons in a Southern League victory over Exeter City that September. He was a regular in West Ham’s first eleven until the suspension of peacetime football due to the advent of the First World War at the end of the 1914-15 season, by when he had scored 3 goals in 146 appearances for West Ham. He was part of the West Ham giant killing teams that beat Nottingham Forest 2-1, Preston North End 3-0 and Manchester United 2-1 in the 1911 FA Cup, before eventually losing 3-2 at home to Blackburn Rovers in the quarter final. He played 3 more wartime fixtures in 1915 and 1916 before his eventual retirement.
