Farnham, Surrey born goalkeeper John Whitbourn began his football career in north east football with South Bank in 1903 and from there joined First Division club Sunderland in 1904, making his Football League debut at Nottingham Forest that October, playing 3 times for The Wearsiders, one of 4 goalkeepers used that season. He joined Southern League Tottenham Hotspur in 1905 and made 19 appearances for the club over the next three years before they ascended to the Football League. In 1908 he joined Southern League club Leyton, where he finished his known senior career.
