Seaham, County Durham born full back Joe Osmond played local junior football with Sunderland West End after World War One before joining Second Division Clapton Orient in 1919, making his Football League debut at Port Vale that November, his only appearance of the season. He became a first team regular from early in 1921, and played 29 times in 1921-22, but he lost his place having played twice in August 1922 and never played for the club again. His 4 seasons in East London yielded a total of 52 appearances, before a move back to the North East with Hartlepools United in 1924. He only played once for their first team however, in a 1-1 draw at home to Lincoln City in November 1924, before retiring from professional football.
